Guide · Healthcare in Ireland for newcomers

Healthcare in Ireland, explained for people arriving from the US and beyond.

Public and private, GPs and hospitals, insurance and waiting lists — what actually matters in your first weeks, and where families most often overpay or under-cover.

Nothing on this page is medical advice or a recommendation of a specific insurance policy. Regulated advice comes from Irish medical professionals and authorised health-insurance intermediaries — SettleDone coordinates access to them.

At a glance

The five moving parts of Irish healthcare.

  1. Public system (HSE)

    Available to anyone ordinarily resident.

The Health Service Executive runs public hospitals, community services and public health programmes. Non-urgent care can involve significant wait times, which is the main reason most working households layer private insurance on top.

  2. Private health insurance

    Standard for professional households.

Providers include Irish Life Health, Laya Healthcare, VHI and others. Plans differ significantly on hospital access, orthopaedic cover, maternity and outpatient benefits. Choosing well matters more than choosing quickly.

  3. GPs and primary care

Choose a practice near where you live.

Register with a local GP practice; some ask for previous medical history. Most non-emergency care flows through GP referral, so a responsive practice materially improves the first year.

  4. Hospitals and consultants

    Public and private, sometimes overlapping.

Consultants often work across both public and private settings. Private insurance opens access to private hospitals and shorter waiting lists for elective procedures.

  5. Records and continuity

    Bring your history with you.

There is no automated cross-border record transfer. Bring summaries of vaccinations, ongoing conditions, prescriptions and specialist reports — ideally translated where relevant. GPs can then set up local records cleanly.
